When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

I did not ever think about being a writer to be quite honest with you. I mean I absolutely love doing it but the writing just happened around my 40th birthday in 2010 and it never stopped. At the time I was running a clothing store and had been retail management for years and then I suddenly had the urge to sit down and write. My first book was book one in the Blood & Light series and I tortured myself with my first writing project as it ended up being 6 novels and 2800 pages long.

Blood and Light on Amazon
Enter into the world of 16 year-old Rue Volley...who, up until one fateful night, thought she was "normal" or as "normal" as she could be.
But "normal" does not include being a vampire...a truth about herself that she will soon discover.

Rue Volley lives in the quiet little town of Calvary, Minnesota...nestled in the thick woods lining the Great Lakes. Rue, along with her
brother Kai, have lived an otherwise calm life up until their Mother was committed into Rolling River Asylum after she mysteriously stopped
speaking to anyone. Rue is convinced by her brother to attend a party on her birthday, and after she experiences something that she cannot
explain, she and everyone in her world is thrown into madness. Join Rue on this epic journey, 6 books in all, as she struggles with grief,
love, humor, old crushes, newfound infatuations, hot boys, AND vampires, lots and lots of them.

This first book in the series starts you on a journey that you will find hard to ignore and once you start reading you will be hooked...or
perhaps bitten.

How long did it take you to write your book?

Well, my pace is not normal. I have written and published 28 books since 2010. 7 of them are 400 plus page novels and the rest are shorts ranging from 25 to 50 pages in length. Sometimes I can write 30 pages a day when I am in mode and others I write nothing at all, it all depends on inspiration.

What genre is your book? What made you choose to write in that category?

I write in YA, adult fiction and erotica. All of my books, but three, are paranormal in nature. I tend to gravitate towards any immortal creature in my writing, I find them all fascinating. Immortality would be such a horrible thing to manage, I mean one lifetime and the things that occur seem enough to me. So, when I write I always make them damaged as humans are and they come with a realism that makes them believable even though they are here for what seems like forever. Fiction is such a fun place to be as you can make up any rules you like and I always do.

What was your work schedule like when you were writing?

I always write in the morning and no later than 3pm. Why, I do not know but it works best for me. I am a full time writer and graphic artist so I work from home.

What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?

I always write in my pajamas on the couch listening to music. I have the entire time I have done it. Sounds glamorous and it is. lol

Where do you get your information or ideas for your books?

Life, for a huge portion of it as in things said to me, by me, things I have experienced, people I have known or encounter and then the rest is insanity.

How many books have you written? Which is your favorite?

28 and I love them all. If I try to even attempt to pick one and single it out the rest will gang up on me and you will not see me again.

Are you currently working on another book? If so, is it part of a series or something different?

I am wrapping up three books right now. I like to multitask evidently. Right now I am finishing the 6th book in the Double Gun Dealer series which an erotic about demon hunters that has been massive fun to write and I am also working on book two in a YA series called a witch’s tale “This and That and what killed the cat” and then a novel for the Hunter’s Blood series called “Dog Will Hunt”.

What do you like to do when you're not writing?

I am a professional photographer so I shoot a lot and then I also make jewelry for my company “Stuff & Things and what boredom brings” of which I give half the proceeds to Breast Cancer Research in my Mom’s memory who passed from it in March 2012.Other than that I love movies and music and could nto live without either.

What does your family think of your writing?

My family has always supported me in everything that I do and to them it was just another day in the life of Rue and what I like to do.

What was one of the most surprising things you learned about yourself in creating your books?

That I could.

Do you have any suggestions to help others become a better writer? If so, what are they?

Well first of all do not overthink it. There will be people who like to tear you down and think they know better but ignore it and write from your heart. To me writing is a very personal thing that has saved me on many occasion from sorrow in my life and I think something that precious deserves respect. You do not have to have a college degree in Literature to be a successful writer, what you need is the ability to make people believe the characters are real and connect to them, have a great plot and let the characters drive the story for you. I cannot tell you how many times I just felt like the reader as I wrote things and had no idea where they came from. That is when the story has found life and just let it happen.

Do you hear from your readers much? What kinds of things do they say?

I actually do. They often thank me for the stories or the way I tell it. I appreciate that as anyone would to hear that your fans actually love the things you produce. Then I have the fun stuff like “when did you become a vampire?” “will you bite me?” and “are you married?” Answers... “never, no and yes”. lol

What do you think makes a good story?

I think a great story should bust right out of the gate on the first page, drag you into the thick of it and shake you around a bit. I love characters, all damaged and sarcastic and fighting for something. I play with banter and let them tell the story as opposed to a bunch of flowery description, I know some people do it well but it is just not my style or thing really. I am influenced by shows like “Supernatural”, “Firefly” and writers like Tarantino and David Lynch. That is what I do in my books, I try to write it like a series you are watching on TV and make it as twisted and fun as possible like life really is. Everything is so unpredictable and I stay true to that.

As a child, what did you want to do when you grew up?

a vet or an astronaut. I wanted to save or explore.

Are you self published or do you have a publisher? If self published, what made you decide to go that route?

I am signed to Vamptasy Publishing out of the UK which just merged with Crushing Hearts and Black Butterfly Publishing. I had books on CHBB prior to the merger as SJ Davis, owner of CHBB, was my writing sister on Vamptasy before she branched off and started her own publishing company. She also owns Hot Ink Press and I had a best selling series on there before the merger too. I could not be happier to be back with her and Nicola Ormerod is with us too, she owned Vamptasy prior to the merger and still runs “Karabeth Publishing” very successfully.
